"

In the commercial world, to truly embrace sustainability, events need to consider not just their financial performance, but also the role the event can play in wider society.

Events need to minimize their environmental impacts and maximize any benefits they can offer to the community and the planet

- Meegan Jones (2010)"

Fortunately, I think more and more organizations are coming round to this way of thinking. The others will catch up too. They’ll have to.

Hungry Seattle: On Festivals And Waste Management

hungryseattle:

Recycle Bin at Mobile Food Rodeo:

You can see plenty of non “recyclables” co-mingled in there, including compostable and non-compostable food serve-ware. Perhaps it was just too hard to pitch those items a foot or so to the left or right, into say, this Trash Bin at Mobile Food Rodeo:

Which seems to have both compostables, trash and recyclables. The Compostable/yard waste bins were similarly polluted with items that should not have been there.

This is just fantastic. Love it. And want one. Or several, for the office!

Reduction Trash Bin

The Reduction trash bin is a concept for replacing the standard 94 gallon municipal/privately supplied trash can with a thought provoking alternative.

With 5% of the world’s population, the US consumes one third of the world’s resources. For a majority of people, the results of this level of consumption are not tangible.

The Reduction trash bin replaces the existing outdoor trash can with an educational tool enabling families to understand the way their level of consumption relates to the world around them. It also provides a way for people to set goals and see real progress in their level of consumption, trash production, and environmental impact.

The Reduction trash bin is truly designed with the user experience in mind and designed to encourage change in behavior. Each time the can is expanded or collapsed, a message is delivered which encourages the user to consider how their level of consumption will impact the world over time.

Pictures, charts and infographics may just be the key to grabbing consumer attention and really making a difference. This is another great example.

Latest Blog Post: Implementing Change

I believe the phrase is nobody likes change. Apart from a wet baby, anyway. And that couldn’t be more appropriate in many organizations. As a result, leadership often finds themselves, as with many strategic approaches, taking the path of least resistance. That is the easiest path which finds favor with the majority opinion of those involved in the planning phase. On paper at least, this is usually seen as the best way to go. It typically begins with an acknowledgement acceptance and everybody (or as close as you can get to everybody at least) is on point and agreeable with what is proposed. However, what this inevitably does is delay the real issues and how to overcome those bigger hurdles. In the meantime, the corporate equivalent of being scared to go to the dentist manifests itself in the hearts and minds of those involved and suddenly those minor obstacles seem more like the pole vault than a hurdle.

Latest Blog Post: Know Your Audience

Last night I was drawn into a twitter conversation with some very experienced bloggers/writers (@StephanieWinans @BrittRubinstein and @AnneReuss) and was faced with the following question: “is the F word ever appropriate for any audience?” Answers ranged from “absolutely” (that was me) to “definitely not” (that wasn’t) and, as often happens in these situations, I ended up thinking about things and arguing with myself to the point where I couldn’t sleep.
